how can i plant my flowers in the pond?
I need some advice on how i can plant my flowers in the pond. I recently bought some flowers for my pond to help the fish to have some shade from the sun, and some oxygen plants as well. I have no idea how i should plant them as my pond is very deep approximately 1 meter deep and the plants are quite small. I know the Lillie’s can float on top but what about other plants like Myosotis palustris Pond Marginal Water Plant and Mares Tail Pond Oxygenating Water Plant?
Myosotis Palustris (water forget-me-not) is as you say, a marginal so it needs to be planted in a pond basket and placed on the shelf of your pond so that the water just covers the top of the basket. You can adjust the height of the basket by putting a brick under it if it needs to be higher. Itwill seed freely so next year it’ll pop up all over the place and you won’t need to bother planting it specially, you’ll probably be weeding it out. Oxygenating plants need to be tied in a small bundle to a stone or half a brick and just dropped into the water at a deep point. Lilies need planting in deep water – only the leaves and flowers float on the top, the roots have to be down at the bottom. Line a pond basket with hessian or any old cloth, put your lily in it, fill the basket with special aquatic compost, tie the cloth firmly round the top of the basket to stop the compost leaking out, and lower it gently into the pond at the deepest part. You can thread strings through the sides and use these to lower it in if you like. Personally, with an established pond with planty of sludge in the bottom, I just tie a brick on a bit of lily root and bung it in, but with a new pond you may like to do it the correct way! You should use proper aqatic compost because if you use ordinary compost it will have fertilizer in it which will affect the water quality and make the pond go green. Why not get a book from the library, or go online and google pond care? there’s masses of info out there and it’s all pretty straightforward once you’ve had a go at it. Good luck!
