Can lighting be used to enhance the elegance of home? The answer surely will be very resounding “yes”. It is lighting that can change the mood, set the feeling and creates an ambience in the room. Now come to room specifications. Surely, in a house there can be many rooms and obviously the lighting requirements of each of these rooms can not be same. Like in kitchen, bathroom or study room a brighter light is required as compared to bedroom, dining room or living room. Even some extra lighting is required in a room where you have to do some creative work like crafting. For deciding how much light do you require in a room, a simple calculation can be made. Simply multiply room length with room width and then the answer should be multiplied with 1.5 and this calculation will give you number of watts that you require in your room. It means a 10 x 10 room will require 150 watts of light. This wattage can also be increased according to the requirements of room.
Let’s have a look on different types of light bulbs that can be used in room lighting. Normally, halogen, fluorescent and incandescent bulbs are used for lighting. Fluorescent lighting is used in places that require brighter lighting like offices kitchens and workshops. This type of lighting is cost effective but it produces harsh light. Incandescent lighting is comparatively softer but it uses more electricity. It burns hotter and needs to be replaced on frequent basis. Halogen lighting is relatively expensive but appears more natural and can also mimic sunlight. Being energy efficient, it burns for longer time but because of hot burning it requires some extra safety measures.
Overhead lighting produces more intense lighting so a dimmer can be used to set the required intensity level. For more stubble lighting lamps can be an excellent choice. Your style and space in room decides what combination of wall lamps, table lamps, floor lamps or ceiling lights can be made. Lamp shades can also be used to diffuse or direct light to a certain area. These are simple but decorative covers that are available in conical or cylindrical shape. Spotlights can also be considered if you have decorative pieces of artwork. In the end, weather the selection should be energy efficient halogen lighting or cost effective fluorescent lighting will depend on your requirements.
