Fun Bird
Would putting up a bird feeder outside the window be teasing my cats or would it be something fun for them?
I have two indoor cats (Jaid & Stu) and I want to put a bird feeder up outside my apartment balcony door. Would this be teasing my kitties and be mean or is it a good idea? I thought it would give them something to watch while I’m at work
Bird feeders are Cat TV. They will love it.

See if you can find information telling you which birds you have in your area, either year round or migratory, and put out feeders which will hold the types of seeds most of the birds will eat – two feeders, with different seeds, can often bring in the majority of different types of birds.
Start with one that holds sunflower seeds and move up from there.
You should also consider putting up a humming bird feeder. If you do, not spent a lot of money on prepared “food”, just use a sugar water.

Some birds will not eat at feeders but, instead, are what is called ground feeders. You can put out sunflower seeds on your balcony for them – the squirrels will like that to. Put down some plastic or such so that you can occasionally dump all the empty shells in the trash and brush off the plastic. If you let the shells build up, they will begin to decay and smell.
The way to keep squirrels out of bird feeders is to feed the squirrels – if they get something to eat, on the ground, they won’t go after the bird feeders.
Cats like watching squirrels as much as birds and sometimes more.
We have a simple shelf feeder (three pieces of cedar) fastened to one of the kitchen windows and it is used mostly by the squirrels.
Our cats can get almost nose to nose with the squirrels, either with the glass or the screen between them.
Once the squirrels figure out that the cats can’t get at them, they will come and dine regularly.
Schuster used to stand up on the bookcase at the window and sort of furiously scrap at the window, first with one paw and then the other, when there was squirrel at the window. The squirrels would look at Schuster, figure he was harmless, and go right on eating.
Schuster was a marvelous, wonderful, lovable cat but there were times when he put it on autopilot – he should have realized that he could not get at the squirrels but he did his scraping at the window quite often, nonetheless.
I just hope he didn’t know the squirrels were laughing at him
