How do fish medications work?
I guess this is more of a scientific question, but I was wondering how the medications we give our fish actually work. Because I was thinking about how you just put like a teaspoon full of meds into 10 gallons of water, and somehow the fish get better. Do the fish absorb it through their skin? Why is it that only so little medication is needed to treat a tank? Thanks!
Fish medications work by killing off whatever parasite or infection is making the fish sick, hopefully without killing your fish.
So it’s important to ID what is actually wrong with the fish before you treat them. It may be White Spot, which is a small amoeba, bacteria like finrot, a fungus infection or internal / gill parasites (flukes or worms).
Then you add the approriate medications, enough to kill the infection, too much, and you kill the fish. Likewise dont mix medications, they may combine to give undesired results (dead fish)
There are some ‘natural’ treatments like using aquarium salt to treat whitespot and fungus. But they work the same way, a low level of salt can kill the infection, without killing your fish.
Prevention is the best way to go. Quarantine new fish and keep your water conditions good, then hopefully your fish stay healthy and dont need medications.
