Filter Koi
Koi Fish, I have a standard 10 gallon take with a heater and filter and I was interested in getting Koi fish.?
Is it possible for them to live in a tank like that, What temperature should the water be at, and any other tips?
While you will be able to house your koi in your 10 gallon, he will eventually need to be reshoulse. Each koi does not need 300 gallons per fish. 73 is the best temperature to keep your koi at. Do not let the water temp fall below 50 however or it will send them into hybernation.
While koi are pond fish, some smaller versions make great tank fish. Not all koi get over 3 feed and with the breeding going on now, they are down sizing this popular fish to the 12″ size.
Koi like goldfish like veggies. Although they get lots of proteins from bugs (in out door ponds) foods with higher protein levels should be used. NO FLOATING pellets. This causes bloat in koi and goldies, also no salt in the tank.
It is a myth that fish in general will only grow to the size of their tank. What happens is there is a chemical secretion not allowing them to grow at the rate they should be, but they won’t “stop” growing. This is not stunting it is a reduction in growth. The problems associated with this however is once your koi become mature (around 4) they are ready to breed. A 4 inch female koi cannot hold the eggs nor safely have the eggs at this size. She can and will become egg bound then beaten up by the males knowin she is with eggs.
Koi actually prefer mud bottom ponds (which is also very healthy when they are young) Sand bottoms are also great for koi.
Feed 3 times per day, fresh veggies from lettuce, peas, green beans, spinach, kale, greens, carrots and red peppers or paprika (for color) They will also eat worms, flys, larve, brine shrimp (although low in protein) Try to refrain from any types of fillers like breads or crackers.
EDIT Sorry forgot to add: Koi are fine in tanks provided they are the correct tanks. Shorter wider tanks make the best tanks for koi. It allows for more Gas exchange for the Dissolved oxygen as well as a larger area for turns and swimming.
