Help with external cannister filter media?

i am thinks of buying a ‘Aqua Sun SCF1200′. its says filter media included but i am not sure what type its comes with. can anyone recommend with what media to use. i want the growing bacteria that the bio-balls offer but i also want stuff that will filter out poop and other things in the water.

You should really find a filter that you can buy ready made media for at your local shops. It makes life a lot easier to live.

In my external canister filter, I use all do it yourself materials.

For mechanical filtration (1st layer), I use poly-fill pillow stuffing (100% polyester, no flame retardants). It clogs up with debris in about half the time a normal filter media does, but its doing twice the filtration.

If you want aquarium stuff, they sell rectangles of filter media that you can cut with scissors to fit the tray (in a tray filter) or use a rubber band to wrap (in a cylinder like a marineland magnum). The stuff is just overpriced batting… so you can buy generic in bulk on ebay pre-cut for most filters.

For Bio Filtration, I use a mix of Seachem Matrix and smashed up pumice rock from a home improvement store.

Bio-Balls aren’t that useful in such a small container. You need like 5 gallons of bio-balls to be highly effective. Anything less is a gimmick and a simple sponge filter will work better.

If I really need chemical filtration, I’ll add carbon in a nylon bag.
