electric yellow lab cichlid question?
I’ve been noticing some unusual behavior from my electric yellow lab recently. I’m fairly new to keeping cichlids, so maybe this is completely normal. But my yellow lab spends all day moving pieces of gravel. (the gravel I have it the size that it has to move them one piece at a time with it’s mouth) He moves them all day until there is a nice round bowl in the gravel, perfectly round.
I end up smoothing it over sometimes when I’m vacuuming the gravel, or just cause I want to see if he’ll do it again. and without a doubt there he is making a nice round bowl in the gravel, always in the exact same spot.
Anyone, know what this means, or why he does it? it seems weird to me, but rather entertaining.
Cichlids tend to move gravel most of the time just to amuse themselves, but the fish could also be making a nest for spawning. The Yellow Lab is a Lake Malawi mouthbrooder, and like most fishes in this group, the male normally makes a nest (a round depression) and tries to lure females to spawn in the nest. If he succeeds, the female lays a few eggs in the nest, the male fertilizes them, and the female picks up the eggs and carries them in her mouth until they have hatched and the fry have absorbed the yolk sac.
If you have only one Yellow Lab in the tank, obviously the spawning won’t happen, but the male still has the impulse to build a nest if he can.
