Help my thermometers are out of whack!?

I just purchased a second coralife digital thermometer yesterday for the purpose of water changes. I wanted to test them out so I put the new one in the tank. The new one registered 84.2!! My old one was reading 78.2. DO I go with the new one for the old one has been going for quite a while. It says that the these thermometers are +- 1.5 f , so that only accounts for 3 degrees. Do I go with the new one? Could the old one by low on batteries?
I think I’m going to take back the new one because I put new batteries in the old one and it still reads the same. I’m going to buy a floating mercury one. It makes more sense that the new one I out of whack because I have my heater set to 78.

I think the new one is going to be more reliable. Old equipment fails when we don’t replace it in enough time, and equipment tends not to last as well as we’d think.

If you want to test it, replace the batteries on the old one. If you still get an off reading, you can buy a third one. This way, if your two new ones read the same, you can chuck the old one and now have 2 new replacements. If the third thermometer is in sync with your old 78 degree one, you know to return the faulty second one you purchased. (If this happens and you threw away the receipt, use the receipt for the third thermometer to return the second one, since it’s the same product.)
