How did my canary get pregnant?
I have 1 budgie and 1 canary in the same cage the only birds I happen to own.
I did not know my canary was pregnant but yesterday she layed 1 egg and another today
I have seen my parakeet trying to mate with her before. I’m confused I had this canary ever since it was a baby it hs never had contact to any other canary

Honey, your canary will lay eggs sometimes just because she’s a girl bird and that is what girl birds do, well, some of them anyway. It does not mean she will have baby birds, only an egg. And No, your parakeet can not get your canary “pregnant”. Only another canary can do this and it has to be a boy bird. He will get on top of the girl bird – mount her – and when their tails meet, he will fertilize her. Only then will she lay eggs that will have baby birds inside the egg. Since she is laying eggs, she needs more calcium. It’s not good for her to keep laying eggs, it is bad for her health. If she keeps laying eggs, you might try getting one or two of her eggs, poke a small pin hole in the top and let the inside drain out. Then give the empty eggs back to her and she won’t lay more eggs because she thinks she already has them and doesn’t need any more. Or you can get a small (very small) smooth plastic copy of an egg and give it to her. This might fool her into thinking she laid it and maybe she won’t lay another one. But until you figure this out, she needs more calcium. Is she getting enough sunlight? This is another important need for birds. Be sure both of your birds are getting enough sun every day or if there is no where you can put their cage to get sun, get what is called a “full-spectrum” light so they will get the kind of light almost as good as the sun on a daily basis. Go to the library and get some books on bird care. Your birds will thank you for it.
