Caring for Your Macaw
Macaws are exquisite looking creatures. These large parrots make wonderful pets for the right people. They are incredibly intelligent and beautiful birds. An ideal owner must be willing to dedicate hours and hours every week to the care of their pet Macaw. If you’re ready for the responsibility, you will have a wonderful companion for up to fifty years. Follow my tips and your new Macaw will be healthy and happy.
- Before bringing your Macaw home, make sure that you have high quality bird cage for him or her. These are large birds, so they require large bird cages. Full grown Macaws have a wing span of about 3 feet, and you will want to purchase a cage that will allow them to fully stretch their wings out.
- Once you’ve brought your Macaw home, be sure to start a feeding schedule right away. You will need to provide your parrot with copious amounts of fresh vegetables and fruits. Organic fruits and vegetables are the best choice because they are not grown with potentially harmful pesticides and additives. Cuttlebone should also be placed in your Macaw’s cage to aid in his or her digestion. Your Macaw should be fed daily at the same time. And make sure to provide your bird with plenty of fresh clean water daily. If you can, encourage him or her to drink from a water bottle rather than a dish. It’s a more sanitary choice.
- In addition to proper housing, food and water, your Macaw also requires a lot of attention and social interaction. Macaws are very social birds and they can learn to talk if you work with them on a daily basis. You should spend at least an hour every day playing with your Macaw. Also provide him or her with plenty of toys for entertainment when you aren’t around. When bored, Macaws are known to revert to maladaptive behaviors such as pulling at their feathers, so keep an eye out for this.
