Zoo shows us the ropes (The State)
About 550 people got a sneak peek last weekend at the newest attraction at
Riverbanks Zoo and Garden – an elevated ropes course.
The course probably won’t open until February, but the zoo wanted to get some
ideas about the flow through the area before constructing a ticket booth and
sidewalks, according to executive director Satch Krantz.
With unusually warm weather for January, the course was packed most of the
weekend with people young and old balancing on platforms and ropes high above
the ground while attached by harnesses to cable lines. Similar courses are
popular elsewhere, often in wooded surroundings. At Riverbanks, the course is
between the Aquarium Reptile Complex and the giraffe yard, offering an African
safari view for those brave enough to look down.
In fact, the course style is called Sky Safari, though Riverbanks hasn’t
settled on an official name. The price for admission (in addition to zoo
admission) also remains up in the air, though the price last weekend was $7
with a $1 reduction for zoo members, Krantz said.
The zoo also is considering a zip line, but that’s at least a year away,
Krantz said.
